Michele Berger

Michele Berger is Senior Counsel at NEO Law Group, where she leads the firm's nonprofit formations practice and has successfully guided the creation of numerous California nonprofit corporations since 2011. She has been recognized as a Northern California Super Lawyer Rising Star (2022, 2023, 2024) and is the author of How can the board of a bar association prevent and respond to sexual harassment? (American Bar Association Bar Leader Magazine, Sep/Oct 2018), Diversity, equity, and inclusion in nonprofit bylaws (American Bar Association Bar Leader Magazine, Mar/Apr 2019), and more than 50 articles on the widely read Nonprofit Law Blog. Now in her 14th year with NEO Law Group, Michele has developed expertise in nonprofit formation and exemption, bylaws drafting and review, charitable registration, fiscal sponsorship, property tax exemption, international grantmaking, and a wide range of governance matters. In addition to her client work, she has led seminars for emerging nonprofit leaders, presented for The Foundation Center, produced short videos on startup legal issues, and co-authored articles for The Nonprofit Quarterly and the Alameda County Bar Association Blog. Michele graduated cum laude from the University of San Francisco School of Law, where she was a member of the McAullife Honor Society and served on the board of Law Students for Reproductive Justice. She received her bachelor's degree in Legal Studies from UC Berkeley and is admitted to practice law in California.
